Old school Preshrunk readers will remember a feature we used to run called “This Old T-Shirt” for all the crafty people in the house. Now, I’m not quite sure if it’s a feature that’s going to make a full comeback or not — but I just came across this months old YouTube video on DIY silkscreening by the gang at Make and I thought I’d share. It’s something that can only really be considered a crash course at best — although it covers most of the basics — but I’m sure the adventurous among you are up for a little trial and error…

Without all the homemade equipment they have, that process would be insanely difficult to do.
Paul,
You don’t really need all the equipment they have to do screen printing. You can get a cheap kit at an art store and do it all yourself just with that. Granted, it won’t be as easy as their setup, but you don’t need a huge press or a bunch of other equipment to do it.
it still takes a bit to get used to. Lots of time and money need to be invested in screenprinting to start making quality prints. The cheap way can work, but id never sell something i didnt know wasnt going to hold up well.
Even better than a super-cheap kit is making a press yourself… as long as you have a good screen and the right ink (with proper additives, depending), you can make awesome single-color prints. I wouldn’t be surprised if people turned out good halftone prints with a setup that isn’t much more than a couple of hinge clamps.
