Tee Of The Week: User Generated Discontent

User Generated Discontent
Inspired by Anil, originally uploaded by heather. [via]

You know, I think that it's time for a brand new regular feature. Do any of you remember when I used to do those? You used to be able to depend on getting something other than t-shirt reviews from me at least one day out of the week. So in the interest of writing about something different for a change, I'm unveiling the optimistically named "Tee Of The Week". This is just a way to showcase either hand made, limited run or interesting t-shirt photos from Flickr once a week.

First on the docket is this Neighborhoodies produced tee by one Heather Powazek Champ, Community Manager for Flickr and all around awesome photographer. Inspired by Anil Dash's "User Generated Discontent" quip on Twitter, this shirt is perfectly nerdy and wonderful for somebody who keeps a patient eye on one of the largest community driven photo sites out there.

If you've got a candidate for Tee Of The Week, feel free to let us know about it. If we dig it too and end up running it, we'll be more than happy to give you full credit (see: link love) for pointing us at it.

Tentacle

Tentacle"A pulpy, tentacled head surmounted a grotesque and scaly body with rudimentary wings; but it was the general outline of the whole which made it most shockingly frightful."

H.P. Lovecraft, The Call of Cthulhu

Our old friends over at Enclothe just relaunched with a brand spanking new site and a batch of fresh designs. And while all of their new shirts are totally kick ass, there really shouldn't be any question as to which one I'd pick given my predilection towards tentacled creatures. More than that tho, I also have a really big interest in the works of one Howard Phillips Lovecraft and the entire Cthulhu Mythos. So naturally this shirt is going to make the oft-mentioned boner quite turgid.

Wow, I can't believe that I just typed that up... That was way dirty — even for me.

Anyhow, thanks to the old boy network, Derek from Enclothe has decided to pony up and offer our readers a really generous, 10% discount code. All you need to do is make sure to enter "preshrinker" when prompted for it during checkout and the system will allegedly take care of the rest. That's pretty awesome of him, right? If you appreciate it, feel free to show him some love and check out his other wares while you're looking around. You don't have to buy anything, but I'm sure he'd love you if you did.

The Virgin Of Heavy Metal

The Virgin Of Heavy MetalI totally love to rock out, but it's hard for me to talk about the metal when I'm so fucking amped over the new M.I.A. album. Yeah, I know it's not actually out yet or anything. Still, a copy of Kala somehow managed to snake its way down the tubes of the internet and onto my hard drive. And holy shit, it's really good. Well, except for "Mango Pickle Down River". I don't know what the hell is up with that track. If I wanted to listen to a bunch of kids rap, I'd toss on some Kris Kross and be done with it.

Okay, enough of that. How about I talk about the shirt for a change? Would you guys like that? The folks at We Are Industry have done a smash up job with this tee that fuses classic catholic imagery with a subtle skull and upside-down crucifix. It's the sort of shirt that will make your churchgoing grandmother shake her head in dismay. And if that's the sort of thing you're all about, it looks like your clothing options just expanded a bit...

TM

TMHave $8? Awesome! You can afford a shirt from the gang at the unfortunately punny NudaTees. While most of their shirts aren't really my thing — sorry guys, I tend to go a little more artsy or minimalist — I do quite like TM.

Now I know I ran ThinkGeek's IM In UR Blank tee a little over a month ago, but I swear that I'm not going to run any old fill-in-the-blank shirt I come across. Besides, this one is way different. For starters, I'm pretty sure the NudaTees folks didn't even intend for anyone to actually write anything in there. I'm sure they wouldn't stop you if you got a hold of a sharpie or your kid brother/sister's Crayola washables to put something interesting in that rounded blank box. Then again, who am I to speak for other people?

Anyhow, the $8.00 price tag is a limited time deal — so if you like anything that they offer, you better get on it...

Death To Helvetica

This picture didn't survive the wash. There's always this little bit of rationalization that goes on in my head when I run into an outlandishly expensive t-shirt that I love. I tell myself things like, "Sure that's a lot of money after you convert it to American currency, but there's free international shipping — so it's not that much more expensive..." But there's no saving this one. Even tho I love the design to death, I can't even bear to look at that $60.00 AUD price tag. I don't even think I could justify buying it if I could manage to squeeze my tubby gut into one.

So why am I running it anyway? Because I adore the design — even if I don't agree with the sentiment. What's more, I've got a gigantic crush on Helvetica. It's number one with a bullet on my all-time favorite typefaces list. I was so excited to see that it was used for the iPhone interface that I list it amongst its selling points. Hell, I'm even considering getting a Helvetica influenced tattoo for my next bit of ink.

So now that you know that, why would I ever like a shirt that calls for the demise of my most favorite sans serif? Because I think it's funny. And while I can't be sure of the true intent of the designer, that sort of shit doesn't matter to me. All I know is that I saw it and laughed enough to want to run it — price tag be damned.

Suits Suck

This picture didn't survive the wash.Oh Entourage, you are pretty much my favorite show on TV right now. Well, other than The Office — but it's on summer break. Every week I impatiently wait for the latest episode only to quickly consume it. Then once it's over a meager half an hour later, I get sad. Not sad enough to go and write in my LiveJournal or anything, but still sort of remorseful that there isn't any more.

Even if I can't stand Walsh, I straight up love this shirt. Part of me wondered who was going to be first to market with their own renditions of this when I saw Billy saunter in wearing this — but it's hard to say who the winner is since there's half a dozen (if not more) shops that are trying to sell them now. Sure there are cheaper ones around, but I can vouch for Busted Tees. They're not a fly-by-night sort of shop that might take your money and run. No sir. They'll get you your shit in an orderly fashion.

Even if you don't get the reference and generally take an anti-suit stance, you still might dig this shirt. For the ironic kids in the crowd, this would probably pair awesomely with a blazer. But me, I'm a fanboy. So I've got my reasons for liking this — and I'm sure the rest of y'all will have yours.

Out To Sea

This picture didn't survive the wash.Damn. PopJunkie sure does make some pretty stuff. What's more, they appear to like to take risks. I mean, this design would have probably looked totally awesome on a weathered blueish grey tee. But they went ahead and ditched the all too standard solid color for stripes — and as far as I'm concerned it's made all the difference. What they've done is taken a great design and actually made it even more compelling. Not all shirts can do this, but the stars seem to have totally lined up on this one.

Crap. I'm gushing. Since I only review t-shirts I actually enjoy tho, that's probably to be expected every once in a while. I try to keep that down to a minimum, but it just sort of creeps out occasionally. Still, this one is totally worth a closer look — even if you can't afford it — to see what they did right.

Muni Is A Mess

This picture didn't survive the wash.Since I'm going to San Francisco this weekend for WordCamp and depending on public transit to get around and reduce my carbon footprint, I'm really hoping that this shirt is kinda wrong. Although why would Mule Design front and make a t-shirt that lies?

Since I'm pretty sure they wouldn't, I'm wondering if I should just tool around in my xB all weekend. Sure it's not as ecologically sound as sharing in the communal experience of a bus/subway car that smells like urine — but if things are really that bad off, maybe I'll just be a dick to Ma Nature.

P.S. If you're going to be at WordCamp on either Saturday or Sunday, you should come up and say hey. I swear that I'm a pretty approachable dude.

From The Depths

This picture didn't survive the wash.Did somebody say "Loch Ness monster in 3D"? No? Well, they should have — because this is exactly what this shirt has on it. What's more, it comes with a pair of glasses you can hand to people so they can enjoy the extra dimensions of your shirt. And I'm not talking about the bulge that your rotund beer gut makes in the bottom of your tee, either.

Okay, so carrying around a pair of 3D glasses to hand people is sort of silly, but the design and concept is still pretty damn sweet. I mean, you don't even really need special glasses to tell what is going on. If you do, well, you probably need to get your eyes checked...

Ugh. That was bad. It's staying in tho, because I'm trying to crank something out before I take off for the weekend. Sorry about that. I'll bring my "A" game next week, honest.

Killovision

This picture didn't survive the wash.Much like yesterday's tee, this is one of those shirts that has a lot of shit going on. Maybe even too much shit for somebody to take in. Despite that fact, I still really like it. Enough to do one of those crazy lip dubs while rocking it.

Maybe I'm getting soft in my old age. Or maybe I'm subconsciously trying to come out of the dresser and say that I actually do dig shirts with a lot of shit on them. Come to think of it, I'm probably just becoming less of a snob. But don't think you're going to see me running super lame CafePress tees anytime soon. Those things still really suck...
